Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre

Signs, Maps, Guides

The visitor centre is a converted fish packing plant.

The Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre is located in Gimli, on the shores of the great lake. The visitor centre, affiliated with the New Iceland Heritage Museum, introduces visitors to some of the natural history of the area and the local fishing industry.

S. Dangerfield Interpretive Planning developed interpretive panels for two exhibits – the geophysical-prehistoric and bird exhibits. The challenge with the first exhibit was to bring together information on lake formation, common questions about the lake, sturgeon, and the first people of the area, all in one exhibit. The bird exhibit included a panel on the endangered piping plover and a message about why you need to be cautious in nesting areas along the shores.

Location: Gimli, MB
